Workshop on Cathodes for

Relativistic Electron Beams

The Naval Research Laboratory, Plasma Physics Division held a 1.5 day workshop on repetitive pulsed, long-lifetime cathodes on May 10-11, 2001.  Attendees had the opportunity to discuss the status of the likely candidates for repetitively pulsed cathodes; eg., low pressure plasma (gas puffed), thermionic, explosive emission, field emission array, and wide bandgap cathodes, and to view the cathode research of the Electra KrF laser program, including various 500 keV, 100 kA, 3000 cm2 explosive emission cathodes and diagnostics to evaluate e-beam uniformity and cathode lifetime.  The goal of the Electra cathode program is to employ a uniform emission cathode with a lifetime of 108 shots and a repetition rate of 5 Hz for a pulse duration of 100 ns flat top.
